| Justification | Abbreviated form is a common attribute in terminology work. |
| Origin | ISO 12620:1999 |
| Explanatory Comment | Edited to update specification. |
| Explanatory Comment | The 12620:1999 standard used /abbreviated form/ as a placeholder broader concept in order to group all abbreviated forms (e.g., short form, abbreviation, initialism, acronym, clipped form, etc.) in the hierarchy of that standard, although in practice, these items are part of a larger flat list enumerating all attribute values associated with /term type/. Nevertheless, some database systems use /abbreviated form/ as a conflated value to indicate that the term is not a full form. The conflation of values is not, however, standardized or uniform. For instance, some systems include /short form/ under the rubric /abbreviated form/ and some split it out because it can be necessary to distinguish between a short form and an abbreviation. |
